I'm not entirely sure, but I hear that Commander is the most popular format in MTG. Commander players on MTGO have requested probably the most features and cards to be added to the client. The article about why they moved the timer mentioned that it was covering information, but in my games I never had that issue. It's new placement in a four player game covers information like how many cards are in the graveyard, it also occupies a place that was already missing information like player counters (poison, experience, energy, etc.) I would suggest that if you want the timer to stay where it is, reduce the space between player name and life total, let the card count and player counters slide over with it, then it may be visible in four player mode.
