Taunting in match is okay?

I'm just confused. An opponent recently told me to "enjoy my 8 mana" after they had a god hand in pioneer and won on t4, no other comm the entire match, taunting my misfortune. So I stopped playing against them, technically stalling, but I think it was warranted. So why does my account get suspended, but the guy who gets off laughing at others, nothing happens to? Please help this make sense.

Being rude, generally speaking, isn't against the terms of service, but walking away from a match and letting yourself time out is against the terms of service. If someone is being rude to the point that it crosses a line into harassment or a threat, you can report them, and if it's just your average salt from playing Magic (being a bad loser, winner, etc) you can block them or hide the chat. On the other hand if you're playing a match in a league/event, and decide to leave mid game, their only choice if they're playing to win is to site there having their time wasted and report you later.

Bro Just type LOL then go back to the game.
They want a reaction from you, so give them one they don't expect. Ha.
Or just turn chat off.

I agree though, don't stall. Concede if you don't want to play.

The only time "Stalling" is appropriate IMO is when your opponent is clearly multi-queuing.

They leave I got to surfing the web, when I see there back, I do my stuff.
Not really stalling but not super tentative.

Hasn't been a problem lately, but I've only been cubing, Did MTGO fix this by disabling it?

I actually would support strict and harsh penalties on ANY trash talking. It's something I deal with ALL THE FRIGGIN TIME and is the sole reason I would love if we could have the option to FULLY block chat so that players wouldn't even see a chat window if they were playing me and my "allow only buddies to chat" option was clicked.

That being said, timing out and stalling is def NOT the way to handle that kinda stuff. In my ideal MTGO world, we'd be able to report players on the spot for trash talking and they'd lose their ability to use chat for awhile for the first offenses and potentially lose their accounts after repeated offenses and warnings. But I also feel the same should happen to people who intentionally stall or let the timer run when they're upset or losing.

Trash talking is fine, what really gets me is intentionally disruptive behavior. I hosted $20 and under budget commander matchs and a guy intentionally joins with to play his cedh deck. Instead of votekicking the player, I become the sole target of the lobby by what I assume are his friends or alt accounts. Not sure if name and shaming is allowed but it was "proxypowernine", "JonnyUtah420", and "WongJeremy".

The devs really need to think about implementing a early leaver penalty(forgiveable if 2/3rds of the other players vote to forgive) and a banned card list option/tix limit when making a lobby. Its super easy to implement since mtgo naturally has format banned cards(Just make a searchable bar and a check mark) and can just go off mtggoldfish's prices since that seems to be the typical card worth.

I do understand it sucks if someone rudely joins a "casual" game with a cEDH deck and I could understand voting to kick them. And if people want to make their own banlist for individual games, like fair enough whatever.

But forcing people to stay in a game out of threat of penalty is ridiculous imo. No one should be forced to play when they don't want to. It's just a silly idea. What if because they're forced to play and dont want to, they just stall the timer out? What if they just pass their turn every time without doing anything? Should we then make a rules that forces them to make plays?

We agree with Gwennie here - you should not be penalized for wanting to leave a game you are not enjoying early. The idea of the game is that it's supposed to be fun. While we sympathize some players want a commitment from their fellow competitors that they won't leave early and disrupt game integrity, that's not a reasonable expectation for a non-Buddy game.

Then don't join the match with an early leaver penalty enabled.....How is this hard to understand? How it is now just enables terrible toxic player attitudes, where players leave if they don't like a hand ect. There would be a forgive system if the player can justify it and have 2/3 of the lobby vote to excuse it. Just have early leaver penalty option that is visible so players know its enabled in that lobby.(Heck even have a filter so players can set it to hide matches with the penalty enabled in a particular lobby). Have a prompt asking "Are you sure you want to join this lobby with an early leaver penalty enabled?" Yes. No. Simple. Its an option that players can choose to participate at their discretion. The only reason I can think of for not having this is people just want to have no accountabilty.

It shouldn't be up to players though to dole out penalties. Like yes, I understand you could just choose not to join the game in that sense. But it brings up the same issue. If you literally are FORCING players to stay against their will out of fear of penalty. What are you gonna do if that player just passes their turn every time without doing anything? What are you going to do if that player just lets the timer run in frustration?

Is it maybe also sort of a "toxic attitude" to selfishly insist that players play with you even if they don't want to?

Another thing I always thought was weird is how many players think "trash talking is fine" yet simply leaving a game you're not enjoying without leaving any harassing comments is a "terrible toxic player attitude". And its wild how consistent this is. There's been tons of times when i've simply played a card someone didn't like and they proceeded to spew all sorts of hateful stuff and name calling and then say that IM the toxic one.

As someone who thinks "trash talking is fine" but leaving a game you're not enjoying without saying anything is "toxic". How do you justify that logic?

OK, someone explain this "early leaver penalty" for me. Who would determine what is "early?" Who would enforce it? What would the penalty be? Would it apply to Play-for-Pay Events? Non-pay events? Both? Multi-player only? So far, I'm not seeing the point.

"In a setting where there is no entry and nothing [money, prizes, ratings] on the line... most players don’t feel obligated to stay in a match where they are NOT HAVING FUN. NOR SHOULD THEY. One nice thing about online play is how fast and easy it is to concede and find a new match." Chris Kiritz, Digital Magic Executive Producer
