It is currently not possible to play a game with both commanders and vanguards. Doing this would also allow players to play commander variants that are meant to be played with different starting life totals by using vanguards that affect starting life but have abilities that can be ignored (for example "Avatar - Diamond Faerie" and "Avatar - Phage the Untouchable").
