In this game I was able to use mana from Gwenna which has the restriction "Spend this mana only to cast creature spells or activate abilities of a creature or creature card" to pay for Tranquil Frillback's enter the battlefield ability. I'm pretty sure this should not be the case.

Ruling indicates it's a triggered ability, so like you, I'm not sure if that counts as "activating" an ability:

Rulings:

up to three times. That is, you may pay

, or choose not to pay. If you chose to pay, the second "reflexive" triggered ability will trigger. You'll choose the modes and targets, if any, for that second ability at that time.

With further testing, Gwenna's mana is also able to be used to pay the cost to put a companion into hand, which I believe is also not a activated ability. I think this is because MTGO labels Gwenna's mana as only able to be used for things with creature sources, not just spells and activated abilities of creatures.
