We constantly test and fine-tune formats to see if we can increase the player base for it. We need data to make good decisions, and as they were firing at the 16 we wanted to see if bumping this up would encourage more play. As Tony said we are watching to see what this does and will modify based on the results.I'm confused why a change was needed at all. The value these events provided even at the minimum 16 players was comparable to a challenge at 32 players if not worse. If anything you could have just reduced the QP payouts since that was quoted as being the issue. Most regular players of the format don't even care about QPs at all since they don't play the formats that end up using the QPs as an entry option. This decision has effectively killed these events entirely. Even the few events that got over 24 players in the past I suspect will no longer do so since players can no longer count on these events firing. I hope I am wrong and we get more and more players and eventually upgrade the trials to an actual 32 player challenge but I feel this move was done prematurely before duel commander got sufficient traction on MTGO.
I do believe that simply increasing the player count requirements achieves the opposite of this. I completely understand if the trials were providing too much value. Removing QPs, or nerfing the rewards in a different way is a better solution. A higher player count requirement only works as an incentive in case the rewards are increased as well (which isn't your goal here).as they were firing at the 16 we wanted to see if bumping this up would encourage more play
