Resolved Atraxa's skitterfang trigger issue

At the beginning of combat phase, with Atraxa's Skitterfang's effect on the stack, I cast Charge of the Mites to kill the skitterfang. My opponent was still able to give one of his other creatures flying. Is that how it works? The Skitterfang is dead by the time the trigger resolves therefore he couldn't take any more counters from it.

That’s normal functionality. The oil counter was removed at the start of combat, and as you said, is already on the stack. Th skitterfang dying doesn’t affect this triggered ability.

This is incorrect. OP mentioned "remove Skitterfang with the ability on the stack". The oil counter isn't removed until the ability resolves. In this case, there aren't any oil counters to remove from Skitterfang so nothing else happens.
