Hammerheim is already on mtgo, but not its on-color cycle-mate Tolaria. This is a low-opportunity cost potential engine that deserves a look in Legacy and represents a potentially important difference between paper and online play.

This is probably another "art royalty" issue. Hammerheim was re-issued in Masters Edition III, allowing Daybreak to release it. Wizards of the Coast would have to reprint Tolaria for Daybreak to consider releasing it, and since WotC has all but sworn off Banding, I don't think that's likely to happen.

thanks for your reply. I'm not totally familiar with this issue, but: the hammerheim in the Masters edition has the same art as the legends one? And anyway, what exactly stops MTGO from just making a MTGO-exclusive art and releasing it in chests? I'm sure there's many examples, but to take a simple one: like this one https://www.goatbots.com/card/the-tabernacle-at-pendrell-vale#prm? And also can you tell me where wotc "swore off" banding? Tolaria isn't on the reserve list and with the esoteric self-aware reprints like in the deadpool set I can definitely see that they could do like a "banding secret lair" or something? AFAIK landwalk is also deprecated, but they reprinted hammerheim in some lord of the rings recently?

Good points all. The Hammerheim re-release in ME3 may have been from an artist they had an individual agreement/contract with, I don't know. The MTGO-exclusive art you referenced (Tabernacle) may be a similar thing. As for Banding, I just recall reading somewhere years ago that WotC had decided Banding was too complex and their user-base didn't like it (personally, I did). But I haven't seen a Banding card since Weatherlight (1997). I am admittedly unfamiliar with the Deadpool set since it's not on MTGO. As for why Hammerheim (and Urborg, for that matter) were in LotR, you got me. I can only think of one creature in the set with land walk (Colossal Whale, Islandwalk), though in that set Mountainwalk and maybe even Swampwalk would have seemed more thematically accurate.

It would be nice (and appreciated) if a Daybreak guru would answer all the above questions for us. Time will tell...

Right, what I mean is that MTGO, the current MTGO licensed and published by Daybreak Games, isn't allowed to. That Tabernacle was made while MTGO was still operated by WotC.

Right, it makes sense. Aren't there WOTC people on this forum as well? They must collaborate closely, so it would seem to be a minor inconvenience moreso than a deal-breaker?

Just out of curiousity, I googled to see if anyone else has had this idea, and it seems like there are already published (successfuly) paper legacy decklists with this tech, e.g. https://mtgdecks.net/Legacy/cephalid-breakfast-decklist-by-alexander-maier-2991778.

From my side, it could be done actually quite easily, given how ubiquitous Tolaria the place actually is: just repurpose some art from outside of an existing tournament-legal card (e.g. from a book, promotional files, etc.) that has digital files, a continued collaboration with the artist, and is generally unproblematic. I'm basing this on the Mark Tedin MB2 Urza that was repurposed from the vanguard card: https://www.goatbots.com/card/urza-lord-high-artificer#future-foil. Heck, honestly, given what the original card actually looks like, they could just dust off some unused art they have for a basic island lying around and use that!
