Announcements

IMPORTANT ACCOUNT SECURITY INFORMATION

Players have been understandably expressing concern about account security in light of account-theft reports on social media.

Two-factor authentication for MTGO is in active development, but in the meantime, please remember:

Players with a strong MTGO-only password that they have never shared or exposed aren't targets of account theft—having such a password should be part of every player's account security.

Until we can deploy two-factor authentication, awareness of how passwords are stolen is a player's best defense against account theft. Here are some critical mistakes to avoid:
  • Password Re-Use: There have been no Magic Online data breaches under Daybreak, but a data breach or bad actors on a website where you have re-used your Magic Online password can lead to bad actors trying the password elsewhere. Never re-use your Magic Online password or one similar to it.
  • Password Sharing: Whether given intentionally to friends or unintentionally to phishing and social engineering efforts, sharing your password with any person or entity puts your account at serious risk of theft.
  • Password Strength: Accounts with passwords that are guessable, short, or overly simple are at greater risk of theft. Make your password strong!
Password strength and care are the common threads here. Change your MTGO password today to a unique, complex alternative and never give it to anyone or enter it in anything other than our login screen or Help site. Players who do reduce their risk of account theft to near zero.

Should you suspect your account has been compromised, you can log into help.mtgo.com to file a Customer Service ticket. If you are locked out of the account due to a compromise in progress, you should create a brand-new MTGO account and then log into the Help site with those credentials. Contacting us via social media can help, but that generally isn't quick enough to stop an event in progress.

We’re celebrating all things across MTGO’s Horizons this month! To close things out, we’re bringing back Modern Horizons 2 for two weeks of draft madness … sometimes even drafting a deck with madness!

As usual with this set, we will offer both Keeper and Phantom Leagues. Both start at 10 a.m. PT (17:00 UTC) tomorrow and run until the early downtime on Wednesday, April 5 – no new matches after midnight PT (7:00 UTC) that day. The regular entry options for MH2 Draft apply, that is:

  • Phantom – 10 Event Tickets or 100 Play Points

Alternate Play Schedule

  • April 5-12 – By popular demand, we will bring back Dominaria Remastered for one week as a Flashback (Phantom only)
  • April 12-MOM Release – We were going to do Scars of Mirrodin Block Flashback Draft, but we realized it was just run back in November. So instead we are going to experiment with a cheaper version of Supreme Draft featuring The Brother's War! More details next week
Looking a bit further ahead for you Cube aficionados, the plan for upcoming Cubes is as follows:
  • May 3-10 – With MagicCon Minneapolis on the tabletop schedule, Magic 30 Cube returns for another go-around.
  • May 10-24 Vintage Cube returns for a two-week session in support of the MOCS Showcase on May 20.

PREMIER PLAY

MOCS Season 2 & Qualifier Schedule

We have updated the Event Calendar on the Premier Play page (click link at top of Blog) with the schedule for MOCS Season 2. Due to the timing of our summer releases and Pro Tour Barcelona, MOCS Season 2 is a bit more compressed than normal:
  • QP earning lasts until July 5
  • The Postseason follows July 8-23
  • The Showcase is on August 26
Also appearing on the Calendar are the first batch of Qualifiers and Super Qualifiers that feed the Regional Championships for 2023-24 Cycle 1 held late this year. For now, only those events taking Season 2 QPs as entry option appear on the Calendar. MTGO’s RCQ round for this Cycle lasts until August (a bit longer than normal), so we’ll post more events feeding it at a later date.

THE LEAD

Additional Step to Fight Win-Trading

Magic Online is an incredible game that's been enjoyed by many players for years. However, like many online games, it has faced many issues with bad actors who try to game the system. One of the most pernicious problems has been "win-trading," where players create multiple accounts and use them to unfairly win prizes in a league.

We've tried various solutions to combat win-trading, but unfortunately, none have been proven to solve the issue for good. Redistributing the prizes to make first place less lucrative has resulted in unhappy customers, and technical solutions have either been insufficient or have been circumvented by the win-traders. So, we are taking another step towards reducing the instances of win trading in our smaller Leagues.

The main vector that bad actors have used to conduct win-trading has been to create a handful of new accounts, then purchase the Account Upgrade Kit (AUK) for $4.99 each. Each AUK included 100 Play Points - enough to directly enter a regular Constructed League. The amount of extra value the Kit provided – combined with tactics to ensure matching up against their own accounts – led to enough prize profit to feed the win-trading cycle.

Therefore, we are reducing the amount of Play Points available in the AUK from 100 to 60 starting today.

The ultimate goal is to improve the experience for legitimate League competitors. This has no actual effect on existing players (you have likely already made that one-time purchase), but it should undercut the profit motive enough for bad actors. The team will continue to monitor this closely and you can provide feedback on our social channels (especially Discord).

Now, we understand that based on current event structures however, taking this action would make it harder for actual new players to have an on-ramp to play in paid Events.

Phantom Sealed Returns Tomorrow

To mitigate the AUK changes, we are re-introducing Phantom Sealed as an occasional event offering available to both new and existing players.

The Phyrexia: All Will Be One Phantom Sealed League begins tomorrow at 10 a.m. PT (17:00 UTC) and will run until March of the Machine debuts on April 18. Like our previous offerings, Phantom Sealed will start up approximately three weeks after the release of a draftable Standard-legal expansion.

Prizes for this 3-match League are 30 Play Points per match win with a Friendly Trophy added for players who go 3-0 in a course.

Following that will be Modern Horizons 2 in both Keeper and Phantom Draft Leagues. More details on that will be in this space next week – enjoy!

Here’s a look at the schedule of events coming up between now and March of the Machine. Each description mentions whether or not the Draft is Phantom – cards won’t be added to players’ collections in Phantom events. All event transitions are at 10 a.m. PT.

BANNED AND RESTRICTED UPDATE

Yesterday, we implemented bans in the Legacy format announced here for White Plume Adventurer and Expressive Iteration. Per our normal policy, players who had those cards in League decks at the time were refunded their entry and given prizes earned up to that point.

TREASURE CHEST UPDATES TOMORROW

As has become tradition, we are updating the contents of Treasure Chests about a month after a new set’s release. We will announce the exact timing of the update tomorrow morning on Discord and Twitter (links at the top) - it should be a bit after 10 a.m. PT (18:00 UTC)

The change list is live now – click the link at the top of the Blog. The biggest changes are:
  • The TC-Only slot has again been removed.
  • Curated slot ratios have changed.
  • The Borderless Praetors from Phyrexia: All Will Be One are now available via Treasure Chests.
  • At Studio X’s request, the MTGO team implemented Undermountain Adventurer and Ravenloft Adventurer as possible substitutes for the just-banned White Plume Adventurer. Those cards appear at an elevated rate in Treasure Chests for the next month-plus until the March of the Machine release.

DOMINARIA REMASTERED ON MTGO UNTIL NEXT TUESDAY

For one more week we will be featuring the all-reprint set Dominaria Remastered (DMR). Magic Online will be treating that set as a cross between Cube and Standard – that is:
  • Boosters will cost $3.99 USD, the same as a Standard set.
  • Both a Draft league and a single-elimination queue will be offered, but they are keeper and cost the same as those of a Standard set (12 and 15 Event Tickets, respectively, plus the normal suite of alternate entry options).
    • The events run only until Phyrexia: All Will Be One events start next Tuesday, February 7 at 10 a.m. PT (18:00 UTC).
  • Challenge and Premier events this weekend will award booster and set prizes of Dominaria Remastered. Limited Preliminaries will use DMR for Sealed product – no change in entry options.
  • Treasure Chest contents now contain cards from Dominaria Remastered - be sure to look for the usual suite of extended-art and borderless cards!
  • Due to some technical limitations, we have removed borderless and retro commons and uncommons from DMR boosters (the slot where those would have appeared will revert to a regular common slot). We are shifting that group of cards to Magic Online Player Rewards – more details are in this article.
