ALTERNATE PLAY

Alternate Play Schedule

Here’s a look at the schedule of events coming up between now and Outlaws at Thunder Junction. Except for Best-of-One, all of these offerings are Phantom – cards won’t be added to players’ collections in Phantom events. All transitions take place at 10:00 a.m. PT (18:00 UTC) unless otherwise noted.
  • February 6-21 – Murders at Karlov Manor is center stage for these two weeks. As has become our custom, a Best-of-One League will be available for that period.
  • February 21-March 6 – The Fast Follow/Polish/Minor Update of Vintage Cube allows two more weeks of play in a slightly-tweaked sandbox. In a change, we will not be holding 64-Player single-elimination drafts during this run.
  • March 6-13 – The Vintage Cube goes Supreme for one week – everyone's favorite top-two-of-every-pack format returns. This will be the spot where we have one week of 64-Player Drafts of regular Vintage Cube.
  • March 13-20 – An old friend returns: Flashback Invasion Block Draft.
  • March 20-April 10 – Chris Wolf and Ryan Spain will have the first quarterly refresh of Vintage Cube with packages of cards shuttling in and out.
  • April 10-16 – We’ve gathered 18 sets with a medium-to-heavy emphasis on the most universal of card types to create Artifact Chaos Draft!

When Is Vintage Cube Back?

A new regular feature of the Blog, this item will mention when the next scheduled run of our most popular event will take place:
  • Fast Follow Update: February 21-March 6 (no 64’s)
  • Supreme Vintage Cube: March 6-13 (plus 64’s of regular Vintage Cube)
  • Spring Update: March 20-April 10 (64’s TBD)

EVENT UPDATES

New & Upgraded Events on Sundays

As of January 28, we have made the following upgrades and additions to the Challenge schedule on Sundays:
  • The Standard Challenge at 2pm PT will upgrade to the 96-player level for the remainder of the RCQ season.
  • A new Pioneer Challenge 32 starts at 1pm PT (21:00 UTC).
  • A new Modern Challenge begins at 6pm PT (02:00 Monday UTC).
    • That Modern Challenge will be at the 64-player level starting this week
  • The Pauper Challenge on Sundays at 10am PT is being returned to the 64-player level based on consistent turnout this month.
  • Finally, a new Modern Preliminary fires at 9am PT (17:00 UTC).

New Second Chance Challenges Start This Week

We've seen recent occurrences of Challenges failing to fire after being newly promoted to a higher prize structure. The team wants to ensure players are able to compete for the highest level of prizes possible based on attendance. When there's a drop due to unforeseen factors, it's a feel-bad for both us and for those players who miss out on that competition.

Based on feedback provided by the community this weekend, we are adding a layer of Second Chance Challenges. The idea is that if a newly promoted Challenge doesn't fire with enough players within 15 minutes of its start time, a backup event that's one prize level down is able to be joined just a few minutes later.

Note: These are separate tournaments, so it is possible for a Second Chance event to fire even if the original event successfully starts. It is expected that the Second Chance event will not fire most weeks.

This will apply to all events using the 96-player structure as well as any events newly promoted to 64. Here's a list of formats, days, and times where new events will be added starting this weekend.
FormatDay/Time PTDay/Time UTCStructure

Standard Preliminaries Added for RCQ Season

To meet demand for Standard competitive play during its RCQ season, we have added a couple handfuls of Preliminaries to the Weekly Schedule. The dates and times appear on our Calendar link at the top of the page, or you can view them in grid form on the Preliminaries page.

Ravnica Remastered Arrives Next Wednesday, January 17!

The first Magic offering of 2024 is a return to one of the game’s most beloved planes – Ravnica! Think of Ravnica Remastered (set code RVR) as a collectible version of Ravnica Cube – over a dozen expansions contribute cards to this play experience, and the Guilds are on full display.

221.png

Magic Online will be the exclusive digital home of Ravnica Remastered! The set will debut when we come up from downtime next Wednesday, January 17.

  • RVR Boosters will cost $3.99 USD in the MTGO Store, the same as a Standard set.
  • Both a Draft league and a single-elimination Draft queue will be offered, but they are keep-the-cards events that cost the same as those of a Standard set (12 and 15 Event Tickets, respectively, plus the normal suite of alternate entry options).
    • The events kick off immediately following downtime and run only until Murders at Karlov Manor events start at 10 a.m. PT (18:00 UTC) on February 6.
  • Preliminary, Challenge, and Premier events utilizing Sealed Deck during this period will use RVR for their product and award booster & set prizes of Ravnica Remastered instead of The Lost Caverns of Ixalan.
    • There is a Limited Super Qualifier on Sunday, January 28 and a Limited Qualifier on Friday, February 2 – both will feature RVR!
    • Constructed Challenge and Premier events will continue to award LCI set prizes.
  • Treasure Chest contents will be updated with Ravnica Remastered included once we come up from downtime - be sure to look for the suite of retro-frame and Anime Borderless cards!
  • Finally, rarity downshifts for RVR will apply right after downtime.

There will be two Bundles available following next week’s downtime, each of which will sell for $39.99 USD in the MTGO Store.

Holidays 2023 Festival Starts Tomorrow!

We’ve reached one of the best times of the year for Magic Online players – the Holidays Festival! As we’ve done the last several years, we’re serving up a heaping helping of great events starting tomorrow Wednesday, December 20.

In addition to Festival hallmarks like a free Magic Online Vintage Cube entry for all accounts active as of December 12th, the return of the All-Access token, and a Week of Super Qualifier, there are extra perks this year:

  • Vintage Cube 64-Player Elimination Drafts around the clock starting tomorrow
  • Using Leftover Season 3 (Red) QPs for Cube Entry
You can get all the details in this article.

ICYMI: Vintage Cube Articles

Our most popular format is back this week for a five-week run, and we have two articles for you to consume before you start playing tomorrow:

All-Access Tokens On-Sale Tomorrow

The Mythic Event Token is back to provide All-Access to the cards in Magic Online for up to two weeks. Purchase the Token starting tomorrow at 10 a.m. PT (18:00 UTC) and you can build almost any deck you want for Constructed games – whether it’s casual, Commander, or competitive – from the time of purchase until Wednesday, January 3 at 10 a.m. PT. (Entry options of events must still be paid)

Read the Holidays article for full details.

MTGO Calendar is Live!

A long-awaited feature is now in place – the Calendar link at the top of every MTGO.com page leads to our brand-new filterable weekly and monthly views – synced to your computer’s time zone!

The Monthly View takes a wide-angle look at what’s happening, but hover over a date and click More to see a quick pop-up of that day’s events.

The Weekly View keeps the next seven days in view, showing off as many or as few events as you want:

  • Are you a Modern specialist and want to know when events are scheduled just for your format?
  • Maybe you’re ready to step up your competition and want to know when events containing a Top 8 are happening ...
We hope you find this version of the Calendar to be super-useful, and like everything else in MTGO, we’d love to get your feedback through our channels linked at the top of the Blog.

MTGO BROADCASTS

Congratulations Corey Baumeister, Modern Super League Champion!

One of Magic Online’s most popular streams – the Super League – wrapped up last week. After 12 weeks of competition and besting 15 other competitors, Corey Baumeister’s mastery of the Rakdos Evoke mirror proved victorious in the Finals!

The MTGO team would like to extends congratulations to the players and production team for making the show a success! Thankfully, we won’t have to wait long to see what’s next …

Announcing the AlphaFrog Invitational!

A popular stream for watching Pro players try their hand at an Alt-Vintage Cube is coming to the MTGO Twitch channel starting next week! Designed by Gavin Thompson-Exner – AlphaFrog himself – the Cube has been a place for some of the biggest names in Magic to show off, goof around, and compete against their peers.

Next Tuesday, November 28 at 1 p.m. PT (21:00 UTC), a single pod of eight will draft and then battle on stream. The four survivors with winning records after three rounds will be invited back the next week to take on new challengers.

The first episode is literally stacked with talent – TWO World Champions, Two Hall-of-Famers, and Three PT-Level Event Winners. Just look at these names:

Jean-Emmanuel Depraz, Nathan Steuer, Corey Baumeister, Luis Scott-Vargas, Reid Duke, Eli Kassis, Luis Salvatto, and Kyle Rose – what a group!

Like the Super League, the players themselves will be handling most of the commentary, so you can get into the minds of some of the game’s best! Why does that matter? Because this will be our Spotlight Cube December 6-20 – mimic the Pros, or forge your own path.

We’ll have an article next Monday, November 27 on MTGO.com where Gavin lays out the history of the Cube, the archetypes and combos, and the full list will be presented. Get Hyped for the AlphaFrog Cube!

QUALITY-OF-LIFE IMPROVEMENTS

We have a number of additional UI improvements the team was able to crank out over the last couple of weeks that’ll make a big difference once you download today’s patch after 9 a.m. PT (17:00 UTC).

Set Timers in Casual Play

You will be able to select the number of minutes each player receives when setting up Open Play, Tournament Practice, and Buddy Challenge matches! And for the first time in MTGO’s history, you'll be able to shift between 15 and 60 minutes in increments of five.

Here’s what the new screen looks like after clicking Create for Open Play or Tournament Practice:

721.png

For Buddy Challenges, the interface is similar and has been refreshed:

701.png
702.png

So whether you want to have a speedy Commander game or want to give a buddy who’s learning MTGO’s ropes more time, this new feature will be a great benefit.

Prompt Box Highlights When You Have Priority

At MagicCon we spent a fair amount of time watching how new players learn to play, and we noticed that it was sometimes hard to tell when it was their turn to act. So to make priority more apparent to players, we have added some blue highlighting around the prompt box on the left side of the Duel Scene.

Space Bar Can Be Keybound

Another long-wanted request has been added – the ability to bind the Space Bar to an action in the same way as the 1, 6, 8, and other keys can be. To make this adjustment, click Settings (the gear icon), then Input Settings, then make changes there.

Once you’re happy with the setup, remember to Export the settings file (at the top-right of the Settings window) to your Desktop so that after reinstalling the client later, you can Import them to get your preferences right in a snap.

MTGO BROADCASTS

Super League Rolls On – Wednesdays at 1pm PT

One of Magic Online’s most popular streams is back – Super League Season 1 continues every Wednesday at 1 p.m. PT (4 p.m. ET / 20:00 UTC). Catch all the action at twitch.tv/officialmagiconline or twitch.tv/anzidmtg. 16 Magic: The Gathering celebrities compete over 12 weeks to determine who reigns supreme in the ever-evolving Modern format.

As Week 9 began, four players were already safely into the Top 8 starting on November 8th – Nathan Steuer, Jesse Robkin, Jim Davis, and Reid Duke.

In the battle of mono-monikered streamers, Kanister and AspiringSpike did enough to reach the Top 8! Meanwhile, CalebD and d00mwake were eliminated from this season’s competition.

We are down to 10 players with 3 shows remaining.

Two places remain in the Top 8 and they’ll go to whoever emerges from the second Last Chance Pod tomorrow: Javier Dominguez, Mason Clark, Corey Baumeister, and YungDingo will battle.

Tune in to check out who makes the final bracket and who will be sent packing!

PREMIER PLAY

Two More RCQs This Weekend

Four more invitations to next year’s first Regional Championship round are at stake across two Qualifiers this weekend:

  • First up is a Limited Qualifier this Saturday, November 4 at 1 a.m. PT (08:00 UTC). It features Wilds of Eldraine Sealed Deck with Top 8 Draft
  • Then it’s the Modern Qualifier on Sunday, November 5 at 2:30 a.m. PT (10:30 UTC).
    • Please note: The time for this event has changed due to a conflict with Daylight Savings Time ending in North America.
Each Qualifier can be entered only with 40 MOCS Season 3 Qualifier Points. The Top 2 finishers earn seats at the RC early next year.

For more information on these events, click the Premier Play Information link at the top of the Blog.

ALTERNATE PLAY

Supreme Wilds of Eldraine Draft Starts Tomorrow

We’re kicking Wilds of Eldraine draft up a notch and giving it the Supreme treatment starting tomorrow, November 1 at 10 a.m. PT (17:00 UTC). Like other Supreme drafts, you draft on your own – open a Phantom pack, take two cards, discard the rest of the pack, and repeat until you’ve seen 18 packs! The power level is through the roof, so catch Supreme WOE Draft during its one-week run.

Entry options are the same as other Phantom Leagues of this type – 10 Event Tickets or 100 Play Points.

Alternate Play Schedule

Here’s a look at the schedule of events coming up between now and The Lost Caverns of Ixalan®. Each description mentions whether or not the Draft is Phantom – cards won’t be added to players’ collections in Phantom events. All transitions take place at 10:00 a.m. PT (17:00 UTC) unless otherwise noted.

  • November 8-22 – Draft Leagues featuring The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth™ Special Edition kick off following downtime on November 8, but will be featured for just two weeks until November 22. Pricing and prizes same as LTR Swiss Draft.

NEW - When Is Vintage Cube Back?

A new regular feature of the Blog, this item will mention when the next scheduled run of our most popular event will take place:

  • Current Cube version: 64-Player Events only - November 22-29
  • Refreshed Cube: Holiday Festival 2023 starting December 20

Time Change Reminder on MTGO Servers Sunday

Daylight Savings Time ends in North America this Sunday – at 2 a.m. Pacific time, the hour falls back to 1 a.m. - the main effect seen on MTGO is that queue and Scheduled Events in progress will (likely) have a one hour delay for the start of a round during that 1-2 a.m. (9:00-10:00 UTC) period.

The MTGO client should display the local start time of Scheduled Events as long as your computer’s clock is set to the local time zone. For those in Europe and other areas which had DST ends a couple days ago, this means that many November 5 events will start at their customary local time.

THE LEAD - Wilds of Eldraine on MTGO

We’re entering the second week of our return to the fairy-tale plane of Eldraine. Wilds of Eldraine events and products are live on Magic Online, and you can check out our traditional set article for information on a ton of new initiatives.

While we had a few hiccups with the initial launch of the set, the team worked quickly to deploy some hotfixes last week to fix a handful of cards along with a minimum deck-size issue in Wilds of Eldraine limited play. We’ve taken some steps on our end to try and avoid similar issues in the future, but we understand that situations like these are frustrating and fall short of the experience we’d like to provide. As a thank you for your time and patience, we have a special treat for all Magic Online players:

Deck Brewer’s Pass - 24 Hours Free!

As a token of our gratitude for joining us in celebrating the Wilds of Eldraine launch, we're extending All-Access to all MTGO accounts for one day at absolutely no cost!

If you’ve already purchased the Deck Brewer’s Pass, you don’t have to do anything – your existing Pass wll now allow All-Access until Friday morning at 10:00 a.m. PT (17:00 UTC).

If you haven’t purchased the Deck Brewer’s Pass, head to the MTGO Store this Thursday, September 14th at 10:00 a.m. PT (17:00 UTC). Enter promo code WILDELDRAINE to activate All-Access and add the Deck Brewer's Pass to your account.

Brew to your heart's content with (almost) every card in MTGO – including Wilds of Eldraine & Wilds of Eldraine Commander – until the token and access are removed at 10:00 a.m. PT on Friday, September 15th. Yes, you heard it right—a full day of All-Access, completely free!

If you'd like to try out the Deck Brewer’s Pass before then, it continues to be available in the store for $20 USD. Full details are available here.

WOE 64-Player Elimination Drafts Start Thursday

One other addition we are including is the return of 64-Player Elimination Drafts, this time featuring Wilds of Eldraine! These are sprinkled through the schedule this Thursday through Sunday - check times inside the MTGO game client.

These events feature the same format as the Vintage Cube version did a couple weeks ago - draft once, win your pod, draft again. Because you get to keep the cards this time, the entry options are 20 Event Tickets or 200 Play Points. The prize structure also remains the same:

Qualifier Points
65005024
53503512
4300206

Depending on how popular these events are, we'll consider whether this is a one-weekend event or whether it'll be a more regular happening.
